Job Vacancy at South African Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH), Project Leader Advocacy & Awareness. South African Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH) invites applicants to apply for Project Leader Advocacy & Awareness Job.

The SAFMH Board is constituted by 17 Mental Health Societies from across South Africa and the SA Mental Health Advocacy Movement. In addition, the organization has about 100 member organizations from all nine provinces that are actively involved in the mental health sector. The Mental Health Societies and member organizations are all independent bodies with their own governing structures. These organizations provide community-based mental health services to communities that are often vulnerable and under-resourced. The SAFMH National Office aims to provide support to these organizations from a strategic national perspective and to a certain extent streamline mental health services in South Africa.


  • Planning, developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating a range of national mental health awareness programmes
  • Designing and developing mental health and human rights publicity, educational and awareness materials, and distributing these to raise awareness at a national level
  • Researching and developing mental health and human rights content and utilising this towards awareness programmes, content and campaigns
  • Writing regular articles for newspapers, magazines and other publications (print and online)
  • Managing the production of the SAFMH electronic and printed newsletters, including scheduling, creating and gathering of content, design and overseeing distribution strategies
  • Media liaison, including the development and dissemination of regular press releases and opinion pieces and conducting interviews with media
  • Draft advocacy and position papers for SAFMH on issues pertaining to mental health, human rights, disability, health and all other areas relevant to SAFMH’s work
  • Conduct reviews and analysis of relevant human rights, health, disability and mental health reports, policy and legislation, and draft comments, reports and feedback on these
  • Compile and present advocacy reports to inform the work of SAFMH and other stakeholders in the mental health and disability sectors, including recommendations and action plans for the development of new initiatives, along with regular report writing on all awareness-related functions of SAFMH
  • Developing and managing SAFMH’s social media and website platforms
  • Liaising with government departments, partner organisations, stakeholders and corporates about the promotion of mental health and human rights messages at a national level
  • Representing and acting as an ambassador for SAFMH at conferences, media briefings, meetings and other platforms and disseminate and gather relevant information
  • Produce and review content and design of factsheets, infographics and other mental health and human rights information and publicity materials
  • Developing, maintaining and promoting SAFMH as a high-quality, national mental health Resource Centre
  • Proofreading, fact-checking and editing SAFMH documentation
  • Running content development and writing workshops for SAFMH staff and Mental Health Societies to assist in the upskilling and capacitation of staff
  • Supporting government, Mental Health Societies and other external stakeholders with the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of mental health awareness programmes and campaigns
  • Develop partnerships with organisations to increase the reach of SAFMH’s ‘mental health in the workplace’ programme
  • Develop credible content for mental health awareness presentations, based on needs analyses
  • Design and deliver mental health awareness presentations and workshops to organisations
  • Brand management and ensuring adherence to SAFMH’s Corporate Identity Guidelines
  • Contributing towards SAFMH’s annual reports
  • Budget and project management related to all areas of responsibility
  • Any other related tasks, as deemed important by the organisation


  • The position requires a highly energetic, organised and vibrant person to drive mental health awareness in an enthusiastic and innovative way, with a proven track record of delivering programmes and projects to a range of audiences
  • Experience in awareness programme development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation is essential
  • Experience in researching and drafting high-quality, credible content
  • High level of proficiency in social media management
  • Experience and knowledge of the mental health, disability and NGO sectors in South Africa
  • Experience in designing and conducting training and educational programmes would be an advantage
  • Graphic design skills would be an advantage
  • Experience in strategy development
  • Experience in reporting and action plan development
  • Excellent project management skills are essential
  • Relevant qualifications such as a degree in Psychology or Journalism
  • Minimum of 3 years experience at Programme / Project Manager or equivalent level
  • High level of literacy and excellent written and admin skills are essential
  • Good communication skills and the ability to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strategic thinker and able to use initiative and work autonomously
  • Valid South African driver’s license and access to own vehicle is essential
